Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often are firmware updates released?

We typically release major firmware updates every 3-4 months, with minor security patches as needed. Our update schedule balances the need for new features and security enhancements with thorough testing and validation.

Critical security patches may be released more urgently when necessary to address any discovered vulnerabilities.

  • Will updating erase my cryptocurrency?

No, updating your firmware will not erase your cryptocurrency. Your private keys remain securely stored on the device during the update process.

However, as a best practice, we always recommend ensuring you have your recovery seed phrase accessible before performing any firmware update, just as a precautionary measure.

Remember that your cryptocurrencies are not actually stored on the device itself – the hardware wallet stores the private keys that provide access to your assets on the blockchain.

  • Is it mandatory to update firmware?

While updating isn't strictly mandatory, we strongly recommend keeping your firmware up to date for several important reasons:

    • Security improvements protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities
    • Bug fixes resolve known issues that could affect usability
    • New cryptocurrency support expands the utility of your device
    • Feature enhancements improve your overall experience

In some cases, certain cryptocurrency applications or features may require a minimum firmware version to function properly.

  • What if my update fails or is interrupted?

CryptKeeper devices are designed with a failsafe update mechanism that prevents "bricking" if an update is interrupted. If your update process fails or is interrupted:

    1. Your device will automatically enter recovery mode
    2. Reconnect your device to your computer
    3. Restart the Desktop App
    4. The app will detect the device in recovery mode and guide you through completing the update

Even in the unlikely event of a complete failure, your recovery seed allows you to restore all your accounts on a new device, which is why keeping your recovery seed secure and accessible is so important.

  • How do I verify the authenticity of firmware updates?

CryptKeeper firmware is cryptographically signed using our master signing keys, and your device automatically verifies this signature before installing any update. This ensures that only authentic CryptKeeper firmware can be installed on your device.

    For additional verification:

    • Our Desktop App displays the cryptographic signature hash
    • We publish these hashes on our website for cross-verification
    • The device itself will display the firmware version and signature information before updating

If you're particularly security-conscious, you can manually verify the signature using our published public keys before proceeding with the update.
